Deadhead Buck

Under Utah’s laws, it’s illegal to touch this deadhead buck.

Springtime is one of our favorite times of the year, as we just love walking the woods looking for dropped antlers. It’s also one of Eric Chesser’s favorite hobbies, and we’ve seen him pick up some monstrous sheds in the past.

In this video he’s out looking for elk antlers. But he isn’t having a whole lot of luck. Then he stumbles across something he wasn’t expecting. Something big.

What would you do in this situation?

Watch the video below:

It had to be difficult for Eric to walk away from such a cool non-typical like this. We certainly hope the head is cleared by the game warden and he allowed to recover it. It’s always unfortunate to find something like this instead of a shed, but who wouldn’t want to take home a cool buck like that?

Most states with laws on picking up deadheads seem to have them on the books to prevent poachers from just shooting a buck, leaving it to rot, and then later claiming they just found it dead. The laws vary from state to state and can be pretty obscure and hard to find in many cases. Obviously, Utah’s laws are probably a bit frustrating.

Really, if you have any doubt on the legality of picking up a set of antlers like this, it is probably best to contact your local game warden or law enforcement agency to find out for sure.
