Short, simple blog post today.  Once again, just spreading the word on some news items:

Watercraft access limited, swimming beach closed at Summit Lake

LINCOLN, Neb. – A planned water-level drawdown of Summit Lake is underway, prompting the closure of the swimming beach and creating limited access for watercraft launching.

A sediment basin maintenance project prompted the need to lower water levels at the Burt County reservoir. Water levels will be kept 6-8 feet below normal pool levels during construction, scheduled to be completed by spring 2022.

A temporary boat launch was explored, but depths and slopes are not be adequate for safe trailered boat launching. Hand-launch watercrafts, such as kayaks, canoes, small jon boats and float tubes, are encouraged for anglers seeking to fish offshore this fall.

“We hope anglers and boaters are understanding during this maintenance project as we work to protect and enhance Summit Lake for future recreational use,” said Jeff Schuckman, Northeast District fisheries manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

I had previously blogged about this work at Summit.  We were hoping that, with some modification, one boat ramp could be kept operational with the water level drawdown.  Turns out that is not going to be possible.  The good news is this project should not take long, and then the water level can recover.

It is renovation season.  Here is another one you should know about:

West Cozad I80 Lake’s fishery to be chemically renovated

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – West Cozad Interstate 80 Lake will be chemically renovated within the next week but is weather dependent.

The rotenone treatment is aimed to eliminate common carp, gizzard shad and other undesirable fish species, which are detrimental to aquatic habitat, water quality and sport fish populations.

Dry conditions are advisable for chemical applications. Recreational access within the treatment area is prohibited while rotenone is being applied.

In preparation for the treatment, biologists have been salvaging game fish and relocating them to other lakes.

Restocking will occur in Sept. with largemouth bass and bluegill. Channel catfish will be stocked in 2022.
