Quick news item today; there are some more trout stockings we try to get  in just before freeze up.  Here is the news release:

More trout stockings for Lincoln, Omaha, Mahoney SP

LINCOLN, Neb. – Rainbow trout will be stocked in Lincoln, Omaha and Eugene T. Mahoney State Park waters this month to provide excellent fishing opportunities this winter.

Trout are scheduled to be stocked at Lincoln’s Holmes Lake and Bowling Lake (south pond) and Mahoney’s CenturyLink Lake on Dec. 12 and 13, and then at Omaha’s Standing Bear Lake on Dec. 16 and 17.

Trout will be supplied, weather permitting, by the Grove Lake Trout Rearing Station near Royal.

Purchase 2020 fishing permits at OutdoorNebraska.org.

Besides what was listed in the news release, let me also note that there were 4,000 more put & take rainbows stocked in Birdwood Lake just west of North Platte last week.

I have been around long enough to know that someone will grumble that none of those stockings were done “out west”.  Yep, that is true.  The curse of Nebraska geography is that by far most of our population lives “back east”.  If we are stocking catchable-size trout to entice beginning anglers to go fish, there are by far more of those folks near waters like Holmes, Bowling, Century Link, and Standing Bear.  On the other hand, we have many more waters in western and northern parts of Nebraska that support trout year-around, places where you could go catch a fish from open water even now!  If I had my choice, I would much rather be “out west”!

We are still waiting on safe ice in most parts of the state.  The trout we just stocked will be very catchable when we get that ice.  Or, if you wish, they can be caught from open water right now!  Get your Christmas shopping done and GO FISH!
