See a mature whitetail shed its velvet on an Illinois deer farm.

There are few things that show deer season is right around the corner in the Midwest than freshly shed velvet. First, crops dry up and farmers are beginning harvest. Next, bucks are shedding velvet and exposing fresh sets of antlers.

Watch this whitetail with some freshly shed velvet.

Bucks shedding velvet is the end of an exciting spring and summer, but just an indicator of what’s to come.

This farm deer was using all sorts of surfaces to take off the remaining velvet. After a day of rubbing its antlers, the velvet has disappeared and now testosterone levels will continue to increase as the fall progresses.

Now it’s time to just sit back and get ready for late October and early November as bucks begin cruising the woods.
