Congratulations to Lewis Abulafia for winning the recent Telephoto Landscapes Assignment with the image, “Solitary Tree in Yellowstone.”

“We came upon this area of the park during the late afternoon as we headed back to the Yellowstone Snow Lodge,” says Abulafia. “The sun had come out and shadows were being cast from adjacent trees and the hillsides. As the sun dipped lower in the sky, the edges of the hills became illuminated and the shadows lengthened giving a sense of perspective and depth. A solitary tree stood out against the hillside background and, using a telephoto lens, I was able to isolate the tree and distill a complex composition to basic elements of light and shadow, shapes and colors.” To contact the photographer, email lhaphoto@cox.net.

Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm F4 at 200mm with 1.4 tele-extender, ISO 200, F18 at 1/200 sec.
