Poachers entered property that was closed due to fire danger.

When hunting season rolls around, so does an increase in poaching incidents. One of the first elk-poaching incidents of the season has just happened in Douglas County, Oregon.

State police say a 27-year-old man arrowed a trophy 8×6 bull elk on private property when it was closed. Cody Miller allegedly shot the big bull Sept. 4 on Roseburg Forest Products property. It was illegal to be in the area at the time because of concerns about fire danger.

According to a press release from the Oregon State Police, he was assisted in the act by two other men—27-year-old Dylan Miller and 25-year-old Brian Philpott. The two men were issued citations for criminal trespass and helping aid in a wildlife offense.

There were also two other males who allegedly assisted in the crime but were not named because they’re juveniles.

The elk was confiscated from Miller four days after the kill, and he was given multiple citations before being released. His citations included counseling in a wildlife violation, unlawful take of a bull elk and hunting on another enclosed land.
