With the deep freeze, rapid thaw and re-freeze of the past week, fishing success is a bit on the skinny side. Many people are just trying to get through the problems brought on by freeze-thaw cycles, with fishing being furthest from their minds right now. French Creek, Allegheny River and steelhead streams are blown out and ice-up – at the same time! With a few exceptions, the ice over on area lakes is sketchy at best. The ice cover and ice bite on several area lakes was looking good until those couple 60 degree days with rain. Forecast is for very cold followed by melting temperatures – in other words, one big mess. Welcome to winter in NW PA. We have area reports, mainly from before the big thaw, but a few from the past couple days as anglers venture back on the ice. Just keep in mind that given the continuing freeze-thaw cycles, no ice is uniformly safe.
