The Boone and Crockett club is now involved in CWD research.

As state agencies across the country deal with their own outbreaks of chronic wasting disease, prominent outdoor groups are stepping up to help.

Now Boone and Crockett has announced their board of directors recently approved a second year of funding for research into the always-fatal neurological disease. Boone and Crockett’s newest president, Ben B. Hollingswoth Jr., has made getting the club more involved in a solution to the CWD problem a focus of the club since he took over.

“Denying we have a problem and just kicking at the dirt isn’t going to cut it,” Hollingsworth said in a Boone and Crockett press release. “I’ve committed my time as club president to getting answers we can use. More research will pay huge dividends in our ability to manage this disease.”

The press release doesn’t state how much Boone and Crockett is donating to the cause, but they are partnering with organizations like the Mule Deer Foundation and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in an effort get CWD a priority for research at land-grant universities across the country.

“We funded three major projects last year and our own research programs at the university level are underway,” Boone and Crockett Professor of Wildlife Conservation Dr. Josh Millspaugh said in the release. “Our grants program has targeted answers to questions about CWD spread, improving testing methods, and understand more about the different strains of CWD.”

Their hope is to see funds dispersed through the Wildlife Management Institute fund in the near future. This would allow a match on funds.

The news of Boone and Crockett pumping more money into CWD research comes hot on the heels of Michigan rolling out a new batch of regulations that are their strictest yet in trying to control the disease.

Over the summer, Wisconsin confirmed CWD in their elk herd and Missouri also expanded special regulations specifically aimed at CWD.
