The Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island came to the rescue of a Barred owl entangled in fishing line and hanging from a Warwick tree. Being nocturnal, there’s no telling how long that animal had been stuck there. With assistance from Warwick’s police, fire and animal control officers Amy Violet and Heather Razza, the owl was freed and brought to the Association’s Wildlife Clinic in Saunderstown. After some rest and unruffling of its feathers, the owl should be good to go and will be set free.
It feels dynamite.
You can cast for twenty minutes, slam the rod against the gunwales, curse a blue streak or swear you hate fishing. You can pack so many jigs and snax into a plastic box that the lid cracks and cracks again before you finally give up trying to push it shut. It’s a hit like dynamite.

No one ever filled up a freezer with grouse and woodcock, and that’s why folks who purse these birds are never considered meat hunters. A whitetail doe or a cow elk, that’s called filling the freezer. The cost center procuring the savory grouse or the two small medallions of livery tasting woodcock breasts places the gamebirds on par with truffles, caviar, and tuna. Ours is a whacky pursuit of a foxy local bird and a seasonally migratory bird with an upside-down brain. Go figure.
