snow geese

Forty eight snow geese and three Ross’s geese caught up in a nasty storm ended up dead on the ground in a parking lot in Idaho Falls.

Even thought the hail was a part of this deadly storm, James Brower, Regional Volunteer Services Coordinator with IDFG, said the likely cause of all the deaths were actually due to lightning.

“I don’t think it was the hail or wind. Hail would have injured the geese. They’d still be alive. All of these were dead. When the officer arrived nothing was moving or twitching.”

Here’s a look at what they found:

Some of the geese were examined on scene and found that “their lungs were exploded” Since sixty-thousand geese use the area as a stop-over on their way north, and while an uncommon event, odd things like this have happened before.

Brewer said, “It’s always sad; it’s never something you want to see”
